My take on the infamous Jersey Devil, aka The Leeds Devil.

This was my current pain in the rear... I mean personal just-for-the-fun-of-it custom. Started it back in November 2008, and since I could only work on him in between commissions and the day job and larger orders and home responsibilities, he's taken FOREVER to do ( doesn't help that I was being ANAL about detailing... ).

I first came up with the idea from KarRedRoses NJ Devil custom contest for the 2008 NJ Pony Meet. There was NO WAY in heck I was going to be able to even START work on the custom before the meet, so I figured I would make it something I could work on in my own time.

The Jersey Devil started life as, I BELIEVE, a G3 My Little Pony Fizzy Pop.
His pose has been altered from FP's original pose, head lowered and stance widened.
Sculpey was used for shoulder, hind hooves, and neck support, with tinfoil for re-posing his head.
The rest is Apoxie Sculpt, with a thick wire hanger skeleton and wire mess for wing support, floral wire wrapped around itself thrice for the tail skeleton, and coated paper clips for horn support.
Teeth were sculpted using a translucent Sculpey.
Body was completely painted over with acrylic paints, and sealed with a matte varnish. Eyes, claws, horns, mouth and teeth were sealed with an glossy sealer.

He will be on display at AnimeNEXT 2009, in either the art show or at my table in artist alley ( I'm in the hallway ).

He will also be on display in the art show at the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show / New Jersey State Fair.

Yep! There is a My Little Pony underneath there! It's why I call most of my custom ponies, "res-culpts", as I pretty much re-sculpt them to become something entirely different. SOMETIMES I'll still show the original pony, like for the ideas I have for the next two non-commissioned customs. They're going to end up being my personal big projects.

Thanks! X3

Danke danke! X3
Man, I just hope that the gallery directors for the art exhibit at the Fair will allow me to take a photo of the display while in the show for this AND my Super Pony painting. They're allowing people to enter ONE painting and ONE standing piece ( like a sculpture and the such ).

I just have until the 29th to finish my painting and get a frame made for it. Sadly, I may have to special custom order it from Michaels. Xx;

DIABLO!! Heh, the robotics team robot at my old high school was named Diablo, after the awesome JD himself. But yeah, nice sculpture you have here. If my friends had told me they were going to AnimeNEXT, I probably would've seen it in person.

Bleh, it won't let me critique properly cause I'm a lowbie broke person with holes in my shoes.

I like the fact that you used a pony for the base, but it doesn't look a thing like a horse. well besides it's muzzle. I also like the coloring you did on the wings and the tail.

The over all coloring though looks a little blah to me, I mean I know it's a monster and isn't supposed to be pretty, but I would have liked to seen some different colors in the fur or at least from the fur to the paw...leg... things. Other then that my only negative about it is the shine on the fur. I'm not sure if that is a pain or a lighting issue. But it makes the whole thing look shiny and a bit plasticy .

Still it's an amazing piece of work, and definitely one you should be proud of.

Absolutely amazing. I really admire your sculpting and painting work and attention to detail throughout the piece. The mouth and teeth look... wow. Can't think of a proper adjective good enough to describe them. Really can't wait to see him in person at the con! :D
